Act 3 Initial Notes

In Act 3, "Depression" is the main rhythm of this chapter. All these main characters are at a really low point since the money was gone. The contrast between this scene to the last scene is really observable, Ruth turns from happy to really depressed. She always wanted to have a nice kitchen and a good living condition for her children, but everything is impossible now. In this scene, it is really easy to see that Mama is a much maturer person in the family compare to Ruth and Beneatha because she stops Beneatha scolding Walter Lee. Mama told Beneatha that even at this low point, she still needs to give him the maximum of love. Asagai invites Beneatha to go to Africa. As an African American, Beneatha has never been to Africa before, she really wants to feel her strong African identity.
